Male Thinking Style / MTS: Male Thinkers, or when behaving in Male Thinking Mode

The Male stereotype thinks in terms of HOW. The MTS likes to solve the situation so she/he can drop the pressure and get back to relaxation / nothing mode. When we are in MTS, mode it is wise to remember that someone else may be more interested in a deeper understanding of the scenario before fixing it.

Offer empathy. E.g It sounds like you would feel better if we spent more time understanding “Why” this situation happened and “WHO” else is
involved?

If you get a yes, ask, would you be willing to hear my perspective?
If you get a yes, respond by: sharing your feelings e.g. :My stress level with this hanging in the air is pretty high. Your Desire e.g.: if this ituation continues any longer, more people could be affected. In respect of my, and the well -being of others, Request e.g. : Would you be willing to discuss the why and how after we fix it?

Female Thinking Style (FTS)

Female Thinkers, or those behaving in Female Thinking Mode, tend to think in terms of
WHY and WHO. The FTS likes to understand the situation so they can feel grounded
in the details and personalities involved.

The stabilizing effect of understanding WHY and WHO assists stress relief through grounding and connection.

When we are in FTS mode, it is helpful to remember that someone else may prefer to fix the situation first
to be free of its pressure before seeking deeper understanding.

Offer empathy:
Example: “It sounds like you would feel better if we fix this possibly dangerous scenario before getting into
why this situation happened and who else is involved?”

If you get a “yes”, ask:

“Would you be willing to hear my perspective?”

If you get a “yes”, respond by:

  • Sharing your feelings: “My frustration over why this happened and who is responsible is pretty intense.”
  • Your desire: “If this situation continues, more people could be affected. I’m wondering if we can consider spending at least 15 more minutes finding out why this problem came up and who is behind it so we can resolve it at the source.”
  • Your request: “Would you be willing to discuss this for another 15 minutes to gain more insight before we fix it?”
